Why Your Hip Mobility Matters More Than You Think

Stiff hips drive knee, back and shoulder problems. Here is how to test and rebuild range.

The hip is the engine of movement

Your hips drive nearly every athletic movement, running, cycling, riding, lifting and changing direction. When they move well, the rest of your body works less. When they do not, everything above and below compensates.

That compensation is why stiff hips are rarely just a hip problem. They are a whole-body problem waiting to happen.

How stiff hips create problems elsewhere

If your hips lack rotation, your knees take it, and knees are not built to rotate. If they lack extension, your lower back arches to give you the range, and your back pays for it. If they lack flexion, your pelvis tilts and your posture shifts.

Most recurring knee, back and even shoulder niggles trace back to a hip that cannot do its job. Fix the hip and the rest often settles.

How to test your hip range

Try a simple squat. Can you keep your chest up and heels down without your knees collapsing in or your back rounding? That tells you about flexion and control.

Try a lunge with your back knee on the floor. Can you lift your chest tall without arching your lower back? That tells you about extension. Stiffness in either is a sign to act on.

How to rebuild it

Start with mobility drills like 90/90 rotations and deep lunges to restore range. Then add strength through that range with controlled squats, lunges and hip thrusts.

Mobility without strength is fragile. The goal is range you can control and load, not range you can only reach passively.

When to get help

If you have pain, a clicking that worsens, or range that does not improve with consistent work, get assessed. Hip impingement and tendinopathy need a specific plan, not generic stretching.
